@bachophile when I worked at Northwestern, it was standard for the residents to see the patient, and call the attending, at home, the night before surgery to discuss the anesthetic plan, what they're going to discuss, etc.
That was, indeed, my face on many an evening phone call when the 1st year resident was going through the (mostly irrelevant) physical exam and (mostly) normal lab results.
