Here they just have to hit a button if you are under 40. You know you are old when they don’t give it a second thought.

im old enough to remember a time before UPC barcodes and when they were made mandatory on all items, so that mad magazine actually had a cover complaining about it

How about writing all the prices on a brown paper bag with a pencil? Then adding them up by hand.

The clerk would write the prices on the bag at the checkout.
I remember them doing that on a paper bag at a small grocery we used in Maine while on vacation. The bag was your receipt.
They also did that on the bag at a local deli.
