Lee Jae-yong: Why South Korea just pardoned the Samsung 'prince'
    https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-62501514

Story on Samsung heir being convicted, twice, on bribery, yet still get another presidential pardon, purportedly because he is needed to lead Samsung to spur South Korea's economic recovery.

Business as usual there. The "chaebols" (which is the name for the big industrial corporations in Korea) control so much of the economy.

I was amazed the first time I went there. In the US, for most of the Korean companies, they are focused in only certain areas. In Korea, they are across everything. I was staying in a Samsung apartment, had a samsung toilet and hot water heater, all appliances were samsung, drove a samsung car (though they did get out of that business), shopped in a samsung store, etc.

You could pretty much live your whole life comfortable without ever having to buy anything other than Samsung (and other big companies are the same)

In a different world where the USA never enacted the Sherman Antitrust Act, the chokehold of "chaebols" may be the fate of the USA too.
