I tip for takeout because they have to do almost as much work as serving you, and sometimes putting it together to go, more.

But I’m pouring my own beer and all you are doing is reading my card for how much I rang up? No tip.

No. They put it in a bag. That's practically no different than just putting it on a plate. And the bag doesn't have to be washed.

No table service, no cleanup afterward, no "would you like more coffee?"

How much do you tip? 20%?

Isn't the point of tipping to allow the people who work in the place to get a reasonable wage rather than to reward wonderful service?

If they're getting paid next to nothing, then not tipping is giving them the shaft, or at least allowing their employer to do so.

I don't know the intricacies or differences between these "one-of" places and a chain, say Mickey-D's with regard to the wage they earn.

We don't tip at Taco Bell, do we?

Not without the accompanying service, no. The tip is incentive for good service, period. They know the deal and most do pretty well. My daughter generally made $20 to $30 an hour.

Just for the sake of full disclosure, it's been more than 10 years since I ate at Taco Bell. Probably more than 15, when I was young and naive.

I don't agree with this. I don't love that waitstaff make lousy wages, but that is also not my fault or my responsibility to fix. As a lifelong tipper, I am pleased to tip generously when s/he has given me good service, and have no problem leaving a chintzy tip to Ms/Mr. Attitude.

(I never stiff waitstaff. You don't know what troubles are burdening them that evening or whether they're working their second shift and their back/feet are killing them, or whatever. They haven't earned a good tip, but I'd rather not leave them nothing at all.)

                      Try this:

                      1. Make it known to the manager/owner that you object to being asked to tip without commensurate service.
                      2. Vote with your feet and don’t go back to that establishment if you are not satisfied with the owner/manager’s response.

A restaurant unique in that it’s the customers that get the tip. And the rest of it if you’re really lucky.

I know we have discussed before, but I wish the US (and the places) would get rid of tipping. Not only in restaurants, but in the US, there seems to be a trend to tip in multiple places - hair cut place, piano tuners (I remember discussing this before), etc. Seems like a lot of service industry places now it is acceptable or even expected to tip.

And I am a believer that tipping does not really change the attitude or service of the person.

I just ordered online from a chinese fast food place, for pickup, and their system makes you jump through some hoops to not tip. They offer you four tip choices, starting at 15%, through 25%, and a 'custom' button, where you have to enter 0, if you want not to tip. There is no bypassing that piece of the order process. I thought that was pretty aggressive for a pickup order.

                                Education is extremely important.

There seems to be more and more of this happening. My daughter just started a job at a fast food place, and they're paying her less than other jobs were offering based on tips she's been told to expect. We shall see.

Right, but you worked at a place where tips were expected and largely given. His daughter is working at a fast food joint. Probably lots of people paging through various screens looking for the zero.

                                      You were warned.

Yeah I know, I'm just saying that FOH positions typically pay well beneath minimum wage, and this kind of flimsy bullshit is nothing new. Before Square paystations, the tip jar was used to get away with it.

I will say, though, that tablet paystation ≠ shitty tips all the time. At my local coffee shop, they have that setup but tipping is the norm. But I think it has to do with how they run their business:

There are 2-3 people behind the counter. When someone takes your order, that's your person. They make your order, talk to you while doing so, ring you up at the end once you're done. So it's not exactly McDonald's.

                                        Please love yourself.

My first job was at the now-defunct Kinney Shoes. I made $3.15 and hour when the minimum wage was $3.35, since I got a 1% commission on sales.
