Their stated mission is to have 40% of their student body to be made up of “underrepresented” and low income students. A middle class white kid is screwed.

Try think of it this way: an "underrepresented" low income kid is screwed from the time he was born; a middle class white kid is screwed only after he has graduated high school.

    Feel better?

But are the “underrepresented” kids vetted beyond their pigments? College admissions probably isn’t where the barriers are for underprivileged kids.

I went to a good US school recently. Most of the minority kids came from solid middle class or higher backgrounds.

No one was from the hood or the barrio.

Another observation - a very high proportion of black students came from immigrant families. (Immigrated here themselves or kids of immigrants)

    Breeding and culture.

Stupid and unambitious people, tend to make stupid and unambitious kids. Those kids that do have something on the ball, are immersed in a culture that values cunning over intelligence, is content with their station in life, and doesn't mind living in failure as long as it is subsidized by someone else. The parents don't care if their children do any better than they do.

Which is why, when you get a gem of a kid from that side of town, they are a pearl beyond price. We, as a society, should endeavor to give that child every opportunity to succeed. Charter schools. Boarding schools. Single sex schools. Free tuition with room, board and pocket money at a Votech or public university.

When the next kid on that side of town looks for role models, I want it to be an engineer, a commissioned officer, a schoolteacher, a doctor, an electrician or a plumber that grew up in the same neighborhood, not the drug dealers on the street corner.

Oh so diverse means not-white. Maybe the interviewer should take English class.

Generally, if someone wants "not white," they should say "not white" rather than misappropriating the term "diverse". Trying to redefine "diverse" into "not white" is intellectually dishonest and quite possibly a douche bag move.

Specific to this Izzy Posen tweet, how do we know Posen didn't make up or misrepresented the incident? I want to know what/who that "prestigious scholarship awarding body" is, and I want to hear that body's side of the story.

It does kind of have that odor, doesn't it? 🙂

We can manage more than one hard sum at a time.

As somebody who qualified as a maths teacher in the UK, to be honest I'm not sure I believe the "prestigious scholarship awarding body" - when I studied, admittedly a long time ago, they were ripping maths graduates' arms off to get them to do teacher training.

                      I was only joking
