Another reason I left academia. Although I was in charge of day-to-day scheduling in the operating room, the guy who was the medical director was looking to leave that position and spend more time in the lab. I was on deck.

It is socially adaptive to be dumb enough to be a true believer in whatever ideas one's culture propagates. Otherwise you have to fake it, which most people do to some extent. But those who don't have to fake their solidarity with the indoctrinated masses, are at an advantage.
