Best release I’ve seen in ages.

Nostalgic but fresh. Great action, great drama. You’ll be on the edge of your seat in parts.

We saw it at one of those dine-in cinemas. Front row, in chaise lounges.

        We are going. Probably IMAX

u convinced me. aviation and specifically naval aviation has always been a particular fascination of mine.

seeing it today in 4dx. which is a modality ive never tried...IMAX has made me a bit vertiginous in the past

Will probably be the first movie I see in theaters in 2.5 years, which is saying something considering I used to watch so many movies I had a movie review website.

When my son was your kid’s age there was no covid so we did see movies, it’s just that they all had talking animals in them.

I actually look forward to taking my kids to movies soon. I was lucky in that my daughter was 2 and 3 during the pandemic, so she's only now entering the "watch movies" phase.

@jon-nyc movie was great. I dont think the 4dx was significant in the enjoyment, just a seat rattling around as the jets flew, and lots of wind as the engines roared. but i think IMAX would have been more visceral. 4dx felt like a disney ride for 7 year olds.

but yes liked the movie, some parts predictable..(no spoliers but all the last minute salvations seemed predictable, it is hollowood and the good guys always win)

by the way, it seemed to me obvious that Iran was the unnamed "rogue state" especially with the antique F-14s in play, but ive seen online a number of refutations.

be that as it may, we have come to a time where naming a rogue state can lead to an international diplomatic incident. gone are the days of back to the future with the dastardly libyans....or even cold war soviets as the stereotype enemy (what to do about Boris and Natasha in Rocky and Bulwinkle? )

next thing you know they will make world was II movies without Germans and Japanese?

I noticed that too about not naming the state but didn’t they finally name it near the end? At the final briefing aboard the carrier?

@jon-nyc not that I recall. Remained unnamed. But Iran is coastal, has snow capped mountains, and old F-14s. Don’t know how many countries fit that bill.

Ok all the online discussion says it was never named.

Funny , I thought I heard ‘Iranian’ in the final briefing and even took note of it at the time.

                              Saw it yesterday.

I liked the action scenes. No CGI bullshit, or at least they did it so well that it didn't look like CGI. Cruise looks amazing for his age.

The story, on the other hand, was predictable and somewhat boring. It followed the usual formula of "how to make a sequel after 20+ years".

Overall score: 3.5 out of 5.

I watched it tonight. Kept me entertained. That's the first time I've chosen assigned seats at the box office. I wonder when/why that was implemented.

I noticed that for all the gym-bodied young stars of the movie, not a single one of them could throw a football like a boy. Sad.

There was a Silver Alert in the middle of the movie, actually right after the beach scene where they threw the footballs so shamefully. Silver Alerts are like Amber Alerts, except for the elderly. 50 cell phones went off at the same time, destroying immersion for the whole crowd. I hope the person is ok. And I hope they earn this.
