At this point I think the gun lobby is not as powerful as it once was and is simply used as a boogeyman to explain away failure to pass legislation.

Sarah Isgur made an excellent point about this subject on the Advisory Opinions Podcast she hosts with David French (thanks for the tip, @jon-nyc ). She really thinks the ultimate answer to the gun-control issue (as well as many other critical stumbling blocks) is the partisan primaries. She pointed to Alaska's new non-partisan primary as an example of a system that can reduce the power of many partisan lobby groups and organizations and can actually allow progress to be made. https://ballotpedia.org/Primary_elections_in_Alaska

We had jungle primaries for many years. It does keep down the radicals. It's also very good at squashing original thought or grass root movements.

I think it is fair to consider partisan primaries as a failed experiment.

                  It is almost dead.

It's lobbying budget is maybe 1% of big tech.

The NRA could be bankrupt soon.

The hang wringing about the powerful gun lobby is a lie, or maybe just plain ignorance. But it still sells to some audiences.

                    Apparently, Ohio is considering it.

And perhaps one that continues to fail worse each year. Let's remember how close we were to a Sanders dem nominee, and of course let's remember the plurality path of Trump in 2016.

Arming more school staff (by lowering firearm training standard for school staff even lower) — is this what you call “leading on gun control”?

We've already addressed this earlier in the thread.

Mine is generally you hit the target in the intended location.

But the real problem is illegal guns.
