    Good. I have no issue with teaching honest history, but let's teach all of what is important. Stalin and Mao make Hitler look like a piker.

      @Mik

      All three are in the same weight class of bloodthirsty tyrants. Each one is loathsome in his own peculiar way. I would avoid any temptation to tally and itemise their individual degrees of heinousness for comparative analysis.

      Elbows up!

        Stalin, Mao and Hitler really only managed to kill so many more than those who came before them because of modern technology.

        I'm sure Oliver Cromwell, for example, would have happily killed as many if he'd been given the opportunity. Of course, he wasn't a Communist, but he still managed to kill over 40% of the Irish population.

        And they still name streets after the asshole.

        Do they teach that stuff in schools? If so, they presumably blame it on the English rather than a particularly joyless sect of Christianity.

        I was only joking

            I'm not sure the Irish would see it that way. I'm actually a little surprised his statue is still up there in Westminster.

              Ah, more of that "State dictating school curriculum" that Conservatives love so much. So much for "local control."

              Personally, though, I have no problem with teaching Communism (along with other major ideologies) in schools. The focus on Mao, Stalin, and Castro, however, seems to unnecessarily narrow the treatment of the subject. How can you skip over Marx and Lenin and still claim to teach Communism?

                They're only mandating 30 minutes. Maybe they ran out of time.

                    All public curricula is "state" mandated -- public education was long considered the proper domain of the State. You are confusing the criticisms of the DOE and "national curriculum" for the proper matter of State legislation.

                      With a study of communism, you could teach the difference between theory and practice in political systems.

                      Education is extremely important.

                        It's not a 'Communism in theory and practice' type course like you might have in college, it's specifically to communicate Communism's horrors. Remember it's in support of "Victims of Communism Day" or some such.
