What would America look like today, if fifty years ago the MSM had made a commitment to adhere to the best practices of journalism?
No favorites. No agendas other than the Truth. Adequate resources for investigative reporting. Retractions of errors on the front page or at the beginning of a news cast.
What would be the effect over this past half-century and what would the country look like today?

I disagree. There will always be a place for sensationalism or yellow journalism, but if the MSM was playing it straight, I think the country would be in a different place. I think there would be more trust in institutions. I think there would be less graft and back-scratching. And I think you might hear more voices at the table.

Jolly, no one would read it. Maybe today, we might be ready for an alternative to outrage porn, but I don't think so. And absolutely not from the 90s to today.
This reminds me of a South African guy I know who hated how pedestrian and uninspired wedding photography was. All his graduated friends and teachers in photo school tried to tell him, look, it's what the clients want out there. They want lineups of attendees and silly versions to post on Insta, they don't want fine art. But he thought he could be different! He'll be clever, and make the kind of images clients want, but in an elevated way that's so striking they can't help but to love the work!
He did indeed take far better wedding photos. And he also went under as a wedding photographer because he didn't understand.
The very reason the MSM shifted from Edward Murrow to Trump Hatred Network is because that's the only way they can compete against the clickbait. It was an inevitable descent that social media only sped up. Disagree all you want, but I worked as a journalist. All else being equal, no one has yet figured out how to monetize objective, in-depth news in a world where everyone has access to the fentanyl of media sensationalism.

I have to agree with @Aqua-Letifer on this. People dont necessary want to be informed. They want to be entertained.

Hard to know. Probably overall the country would be the same, although perhaps there would be more maturity, intellect, and moderation found in our elected officials. Also, the country would feel less divided (although I'll continue to argue it's not as divided as the media likes you to think).
I do agree that, given the internet/cable proliferation and instant info available to the public, most for-profit corporate news outlets would likely not be very successful.
