Homeschool Prom
-
Saw some pictures from the local homeschooling association's prom last Friday night. To be honest, I was shocked at how many kids were attending this Junior-Senior event.
I think the pandemic's effect on public school vs. homeschooling is going to have more long-term effect than we anticipated.
I talked to one parent recently, that started out during the school closures using a chromebook and the district's curriculim, then switched to the local home-schooling association and their suggested curriculum. They told me the district's work took about 2.5 hours per day and the homeschooling curriculum took 4-5 hours/day. The homeschool curriculum was generally more in-depth and practical enrichment tasks were more frequent.
Due to some childcare issues, they put their child back in public school this year. They have not been pleased with his progress this year vs. last year and are actively trying to rearrange work schedules and work with the local homeschooling association to start his homeschooling again in the fall.
I wonder how prevalent this scenario is nation-wide?

Probably pretty common, in various forms, across the country. For example, I listened to a podcast that had a kid in 100% virtual learning (not homeschooling, per se... but in reality, yes) because the kid was performing much better. The pandemic will have statistical analysis ripple effects for decades...
