This was on CBS Sunday Morning. It's about the most sensible thing I've heard on it, although it really goes nowhere. Much like the original event.

The Academy bans Will Smith from attending the Ceremonies for 10 years. Smith gets to keep all awards already earned, and continues to be eligible for future nominations and future awards.

The Oscars present a convenient ambush spot for out of line comedians unfairly attacking our most honored celebrities, but it is hardly the only venue where comedians are exposed. I would caution those "jokesters" to allow discretion to be the better part of valor, and stop making fun of famous people. It is simply not worth it. And let's be honest - it is simply never funny to bully celebrities with hurtful words.

What's also just plain weird is the fact that this was recorded.
Would anyone you know have a conversation like that with your spouse and freaking RECORD IT?

Not weird at all. Recording it was the point.

A year later:
Here's Why Chris Rock Deserved That Slap
Though it’s clear a lot of folks still think that the star should be able to joke about whoever (sic) he wants, it seems like they’re ok with it because he is known for going after Black women.
You see, it's all about racism. Never mind that the guy who got hit was black, he deserved it. Words have consequences and the consequences should be violence.

Just imagine if a white guy had slapped Rock. Holy crap, it would have been a seismic event in American culture, and lefties would be proudly inconvincible that it wasn't about race.
But it must be said, that no white actor would have conceived of slapping Rock. Not because there's a difference between white actors and Smith, but because the white actors would understand what they have to lose, while Smith correctly understood he didn't have those same stakes.
