not sure why this is a big deal. Seems to me that he is saying the same thing - these islands belong to Japan. 🤷

The islands have been under illegal Russian administration since their 1945 annexation by the Soviet Union at the end of World War II. Japan claims the four southernmost islands, including two of the three largest ones (Iturup and Kunashir), as part of its territory, as well as Shikotan and the Habomai islets, which has led to the ongoing Kuril Islands dispute. The disputed islands are known in Japan as the country's "Northern Territories".[5] In 2018, Russo-Japanese talks on resolving the dispute resumed.[6]

I agree. I was not very clear but I was trying to say that Japan has always claimed them as their own. I am not sure how the wording from "Northern Territories -> Primordial Japan Lands" is much of a difference?

WWIII. But it's not looking good for Russia. Not much of an Axis and China ain't going to sign up.

Is it conceivable that Japan will make a move?

Probably not, but the fact that the Russians saw a need to respond says they are not sure. How many fronts can you defend at once?

Perhaps the Japanese were emboldened by the stiff resistance of the Ukrainians and the Russian failure to make quick work of it.

How many fronts can you defend at once?

Japan asserting its sovereignty over these relatively unimportant (strategically, that is) islands would probably not be a hill for the Russians to die on. Besides, the logistics of defending an island are vastly different from attacking another country on the ground.

              I'm just spitballin', though.

Honestly I expected Japan to buy them back in the early 90s. Seems to me they could have done so in the Yeltsin era.

Why are you so excited? Hoping for a team-up?
