Every modern president has tried to encourage Europe hitting defense targets, what was different about Trump is he publicly threatened them over it.
No, what was different was that Trump got them to do it. "Trying to encourage" is a he'll of a lot different from actually getting something done.
But he didn't get anything done in that regard. Nobody raised defense budgets due to his threats.
Actually, I think he was right in increasing the pressure. However, due to his general demeanour, the threats had the opposite effect, namely a strong pressure on our politicians not to give in to any of his demands - to basically raise a symbolic middle finger.
That would be a good argument for you if it was true. Its not true, however.
A quote from the New York post: "NATO touted a significant uptick in defense spending by Canada and its European members following Presidentt Trump’s years-long call for more nations to pay their fair share.
“This is unprecedented progress, and it is making NATO stronger,” Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said of the 4.6 percent spending hike by those nations in 2019.
NATO announced the ramped-up defense spending ahead of a summit of its member nations’ leaders Tuesday and Wednesday in London.
Stoltenberg also noted that by the end of 2020, those nations will have spent $130 billion more since 2016 — the year Trump was elected."
Even Germany raised its NATO funding.

Putin is getting it done.
Maybe Larry’s argument is that Trump’s public undermining of NATO gave Putin more confidence for such invasions, and thereby Trump deserves some small part of the credit?
One thing I've noticed about you that pegs you to the wall as a dyed in the wool democrat is the way you choose to spin things. Trump didn't "undermine" NATO, and the only people to e er claim he did were democrat propaganda media. He did the exact opposite. As for the rest of the shit you wrote, if Trump gave Putin confidence to invade, why did he not 8nvade while Trump was in office?
What is so pitiful is you democrats and other lefties actually believe the shit you make up in your heads.

Most of the increase has been attributed to an increase in economy GDP (and therefore more money) but that percentages have remained about the same despite Trump’s desire to take credit. Still, he was right for pushing the issue… but overall most counties are still not meeting their target %. Oh and increase in NATO budgets have been on the rise since 2014, namely when Russia began to antagonize the region once again.

The 1st chart shows the last 30 years or so by %. Yes, the EU basically went up a tenth of a percent since 2016, but overall has not changed much at all in terms of % of GDP.
The 2nd chart shows in the increase in actual dollars, but as I mentioned, likely attributed to an increase in GDP (improved economies) than Trump tweets.

Th 3rd chart, demonstrates this 2nd chart's explanation a bit, showing the EU's GDP growth each year since 2014. Anything above zero is good, and it has been from 1.6 to 2.8.
