That said, I still think Galileo should have been crucified for his blasphemic theories of heliocentricity. Why did they let him get away with this?

Exactly. Any idiot could have seen that as soon as you start letting people spout off about the Earth not being the center of the universe, next thing you know you have a reality TV hack for president.
