What's with the names? Major. Commander. What's the next one? Admiral? General?

Those who cheered as J-6 American prisoners were locked in solitary for 18 months without trial, now suddenly fight tooth and nail for foreign terrorists’ "due process". — Buck Sexton

Related, but unrelated (and mildly interesting).

When the US first made a 5 star general, they were going to call that "ranking" Field Marshall.

However, the first one was George Marshall, and he did not want to be called Field Marshall Marshall, so they changed it to 5 star general.

“Major Major had been born too late and too mediocre. Some men are born mediocre, some men achieve mediocrity, and some men have mediocrity thrust upon them. With Major Major it had been all three. Even among men lacking all distinction he inevitably stood out as a man lacking more distinction than all the rest, and people who met him were always impressed by how unimpressive he was.”

“Congressmen with nothing else on their minds could go trotting back and forth through the streets of Washington, D.C., chanting, “Who promoted Major Major? Who promoted Major Major?”

Actually, Major Major had been promoted by an I.B.M. machine with a sense of humor almost as keen as his father’s.
