I don't know if he's the wise leader of our times, but I've never thought he was a dumb man.

He has the freedom to be wise in practice as a leader, rather than being constricted by the populist ideas of people whose votes he is beholden to.

Yet Putin espouses the populism of the Russian nation. In fact, he is very much beholden to it. Thatâs how he is simultaneously a bewildering autocrat to Western conservatives and a frightening tyrant to the progressive left.
