What got me is how the B-17 was not really of a great airplane.

Yeah, it was durable, because of the large areas of the wing and tail.

But was it more *surviable" than its contemporaries?

Look at todays A-10. What a remarkable aircraft - it's an airplane built around a tank, basically. The B-17 was not that, LOL.

I think life was cheap. It is hard to imagine how cheap by today's standards.
