@89th I'll give you the complete history, starting at the very beginning.
1992(+/-) Usenet. Before such a thing as a forum existed, there was Usenet.
1993 or 94: I created a website for my piano business, A new feature available was a message board. Thinking it would be a good selling point for potential customers to talk to each other, I set it up. I was averaging maybe 6 or 8 people posting a day, but none stayed once they'd bought a piano. A couple of years later I got an email from a guy who said he had followed my posts on Usenet and now on my message board, and invited me to join a message board at a place called Pianoworld, saying they needed my outspoken way, that it only had 7 or 8 members and it was dying. I visited, posted a few times, and noticed that unlike my board where people came and went, PW had a small core of "regulars". After a few months, I decided to abandon my message board with its transient style, and spend my time at PW with its small group of regulars.
Over the next several years the PW membership grew, and the non piano related topics grew so popular that the site owner decided to create a separate forum where people could discuss anything. It grew to be the most popular forum there, and politics was a favorite topic. Liberals expressed their opinion, conservatives expressed their opinion, everyone generally got along.
Then one day a lawyer woman from Maine discovered the room. This woman had never actually heard anything from conservatives before, thought the whole world agreed with her, and deciding that she would make it her mission to rid the place of these space aliens called conservatives, publicly announced herself as being their to, and I quote.. "kick some conservative ass".
She went over like a lead balloon, and quickly established a reputation as mentally ill. Before long 2 more women similarly afflicted joined up and the 3 of them being unable to root out the crazy conservatives began plotting behind the scenes to either take the place over by conning the gullible little man who owned the place, or if that failed, by burning it to the ground. They succeeded in burning it to the ground.
Faced with PW closing down the OCR, people began wondering where to go. I dusted off my old website and it's message board and offered it, but at the same time the TNCR forum was created, and more people began coming to TNCR than to mine. Shortly after that there was a presidential election. The 3 wingnuts who burned the OCR down were just certain there was no way Bush would win, but when he won the election they got their panties in such a wad that they split off from TNCR to get away from the damned conservatives. They created a secret forum that only those deemed worthy were allowed access to.
After that, my forum continues with a small group of regulars, TNCR continues to be the most popular, and the whining bitches on the Left were eventually shamed into bringing their forum out of hiding, but making about half of their members moderators to make sure no one expresses an opinion they don't like.

Larry is pretty close. The secret forum was actually created while we were still at PW. WTF was created as a safe space for people who wanted a less rough and tumble discussion style, but it didn't take those guys long to evolve into a very Left-leaning board.
I remember many of the people on the old, original PianoWorld board. Larry, Penny, Jodi, Dave Burton, etc.
I think Frank made a major mistake, when he started listening to people in person, whispering honeyed nothing's in his ear. That, and the behind-the-scenes email campaign. His site could sometimes be raucous, but the info back then is better than it is today, maybe because of some of the conflict. As for the OCR, I never could understand why he shut that down...It helped drive his numbers. A lot.

Larry, would you mind telling the people on your forum board about this new one? Maybe some will want to try this one out.
Also, I think there are some here who go to Well Temper Forum. I think you should have a thread there to let people know about this new forum board.

i think we must have found the good middle spot. I did look at the other forums.
Not a 100% quote, but the response from forum A was that we were too far to one side.
The response from forum B was that we were too far to the other side.
555555
So, I think we must be pretty much in the middle and have good back and forth discussions!!

It's kind of sad that we all can't be together in one place.
I agree!!!!!!!!!!

I am laughing. After piano world - Iād call this The place where more of the right leaning folks ended up, and the other where more of the left leaning folks ended up and there are several folks who post both places. And some people who NEVER forget old enemies!
-
Well, this used to be the place that offered a bigger variety of opinions, which is what drew me here instead of the other place. I'm not here to convince anyone of anything but rather to find flaws in my own reasoning, and for that I need all the arguments from all perspectives. This place has sadly become a little more uniform over the years after a couple of posters left. But it's still interesting most of the time, and I like the unconstrained nature of the discussions.

I agree with Klaus. It is good to have different opinions and I oftentimes learn from those different opinions.
I would not want to be where there is a thread that says "President Trump is bad", and the replies are +1, +2, +3, etc.

That would get boring. LOL
I was once in a seminar on negotiations/relations with different countries and cultures. One of the exercise was to list a topic we are passionate about and list some bullet point to help our point of view.
When we were finished, the instructor took mine and said, "Okay, Jennifer, now I want you to tell me why all the points you listed are wrong!! What is your argument against these??"
It really helped me to look at other points of view and understand where they received their point of view.
I do not agree all the time with everyone on this forum board, but I like the different opinions and ideas that are expressed.
It would be fantastic is some of the forum posters from the other boards (or even new posters) were to come back to here. Variety is good!!!!
