    Damn those unvaccinated ignoramuses!

11 of 15 people at a party (all fully vaccinated) get COVID

    https://www.baltimoresun.com/opinion/op-ed/bs-ed-op-0804-breakthrough-covid-20210803-t32trfpiwzdf5okfar45f64whi-story.html

The money line “ Fortunately, none of us seems to be seriously ill. When fully vaccinated people experience so-called “breakthrough” infection, they tend not to progress to serious disease requiring hospitalization, and I expect that will be the case for us. But I can tell you that even a “mild” case of COVID-19 is pretty miserable. I’ve had fever, chills and muscle aches, and I’ve been weak enough that I can barely get out of bed. I don’t wish this on anybody.”

Uhm, that’s the same with unvaccinated people… In general, they tend to not have serious cases requiring hospitalization. It would be very helpful to know some numbers…

It would also be incredibly helpful to know whether this is from fading immunity, vaccine resistant strains, or a measure of both. We were told a few months ago that testing indicated immunity would last for years… The Israeli booster program seems to indicate otherwise. Of course, we’ve also been told breakthroughs are very rare… Now we are finding that they are at least 20% of new cases and some estimates are going as high as 45%…

The most troubling part? The article reveals that the state governments haven’t even really been tracking breakthrough cases unless the symptoms passed a certain threshold. Garbage In - Garbage Out.

Is that what the unvaccinated people are counting on?

        Counting on? Getting mild cases?

I’m not following the point of the article. The threat of mutations and how they could be different has been known to me and most people for a very long time. It was a major point of why people needed vaccines sooner rather than later.

From some quick search results it looks like the following ballpark estimates are good to know:

            • Around 90-95% of hospitalized COVID cases are for unvaccinated folks
            • 0.004% of vaccinated people in the US have gone to the hospital for COVID
            • 0.0009% of vaccinated people in the US have died from COVID

            Pretty good numbers.

I don't trust your numbers on vaccinated vs. non-vaccinated patients. Anecdotally speaking, as somebody who is in the middle of an outbreak, I'd peg those vaccinated hospitalization numbers higher.

You certainly have much more of a direct observational knowledge than I do. I guess my larger point is........are folks looking at breakthrough cases as a reason not to get vaccinated? It seems the numbers overwhelmingly support the efficacy of vaccines. If not 95% then maybe 90%, or 80%.... heck even 25% would be great compared to no vaccines at all.

I don’t trust the anecdotes but do trust population based peer reviewed data.

Everybody has a story to tell about a friend etc…. And amazingly it is always in support of their point of view.

Jolly, I don’t think you are fudging things, but I also wouldn’t extrapolate your observations to a larger population.

Some people do. Other people who were hesitant about being vaccinated are getting vaccinated. I think what people are eventually going to settle for - if the numbers back it up - is a vaccine that will keep them from being extremely ill, but not necessarily completely protect them.

A point of interest will be reinfection rates for people who did not take the jab, but did have COVID. If previous infection proves as effective as vaccination, it's going to be a heckuva debate.
