Biles bails at the Olympics

I can easily see somebody getting a case of the “yips” and in as dangerous a sport as gymnastics, needing to pull out. That being said, she was making multiple mistakes before this and was frankly doing poorly. This feels like somebody that realizes she wasn’t going to medal and decided to drop out.
I’m not saying that’s what it is, but it feels a little like it…

I wasn't aware of this.
Perhaps her choice to drop out from that competition was the right thing for the team.
That's the opposite of "taking one for the team," right?

To drop out is not bad. To drop out when she did, begs multiple questions. As stated previously, the right thing to do would have been after qualifying.

To address LuFin's Dad's point and yours at the same time - when did her performance allegedly begin to decline?

Team USA was awesome in the Olympics. It was another shining moment.
A very strong argument could be made for Simone knowing when to bail to allow that possibility.
I don’t expect everyone or even most people to agree with that statement but it is valid as any other.

The Coach: Biles your performance ain't makin' it
Biles: Sorry Coach
The Coach: It's too late for sorry, it's time to quit or be fired
Biles: I quit

Team USA took Silver when they were clearly and obviously the favorites going in. Two weeks ago, the question wasn’t whether they would take gold, it was who would battle it out for 2nd and 3rd. https://www.baltimoresun.com/sports/olympics/ct-olympics-gymnastics-simone-biles-20210725-mzhh64rbp5fbxbfwv6xv5g4ffq-story.html This was a Mike Tyson losing to Buster Douglas moment.

That’s the beauty in life, we can disagree. I am so happy for those women on the team and how well they did. It was awesome, especially yesterday. The Gold win was stunning.

It might be prudent to not get into a philosophical exploration about the essence of mental toughness if wearing a mask into 7-eleven is too much. Just sayin'.

That's you, not me. You're projecting. Until recently, I haven't worn a mask anywhere, including crowds.

So I just read this thread because I watch the Olympics on DVR (delay) and didn't want any spoilers. Anyway, Biles went into the Olympics as the GOAT (as she has been for the last 8 years). But during the practice routines and even qualifying (and even the first event of the actual Team Finals right before she pulled out) she was really missing her landings.
If she didn't drop out, USA probably wouldn't have even made the podium IMO, so I thought she did the right thing. She had backup/alternates for a reason (and they really stepped up). For example, Jordan Chiles was given about 20 seconds notice to get ready to do the uneven bars instead of Simon, and Chiles did a great job.
Anyway... I heard the rumors going into watching this, but ultimately I thought Simon did the right thing for the team by letting someone else compete instead of her. It's not like she dropped out and therefore the team got all zeros in her place.
It also allowed some of her teammates who always got 2nd place in the individual events to win gold. Kinda sucks to always come in 2nd place when you're competing with the GOAT.
From a competition perspective, did she choke during these olympics? Yes... but did she also do the right thing for her team and teammates? Yes.
