Dictionary comes from the Latin word Dictionarium. Latin was THE language of Colonial Imperialism. To continue to use Latin is to use the language of the oppressor.

@george-k said in Half-billion: Knowing that the guy who dropped off the computer signed an agreement stating that if he doesn't retrieve it in 90 days, it becomes the property of the computer repair guy, would you ever trust that guy to be on the board of an energy company? Sure, why not? I’m not going fire someone from a Board of Directors just because that some one forgot (or even deliberately decided not) to pickup a computer from some repair shop. If you want to talk information security in a business setting, the security is already breached when you (1) store confidential information on computer where you’re not supposed to, or (2) give a computer with confidential information to a repair shop outside the business’ established IT process. A Director forgot to pickup his kid’s old Mac or his own old gaming PC from a repair shop is not a problem. That Director storing confidential information on his kid’s Mac or gaming PC and give that Mac/PC to an outside repair shop — that may be a problem.

Greensleeves has been around since the 1500's. As with many other folk songs or music based upon old folk songs, much of it is played today. I daresay music theory entered into the production of none of it. The sheer volume of today's music means that most of it will be thrown on the ash heap of history, but some will survive. It always does.

@renauda said in R.I.P. Pierre Cardin: @larry I'm surprised you're not familiar with Tony Rice was he was every bit as big a name and influence in Bluegrass music as Ricky Skaggs or just about anyone you can think of in that scene. Other than his own solo releases, I can't even begin to guess the number of recordings he appeared on alongside or backing other artists. His guitar picking skills rank him with the likes of the late Doc Watson and Clarence White. Certainly one of the most esteemed and best flat pickers of all time. It's possible that I knew him by sight but just don't recognize him by name. My exposure to bluegrass was most all during my childhood days.

@lufins-dad said in The New Movies: @jolly said in The New Movies: COVID is killing the movie theater business. Since studios will have to move product through streaming services, what will the new movies look like. I think they will look a lot like movies from the 1940's. Few blockbuster spectacles, lower budgets and many more pictures filmed on sets rather than on location. Strategic CGI when needed. What do you think the new movies will look like? My guess is they will be about NY City Girls traveling back to their hometowns for Christmas, meet some guy in flannel, fall in love, then find out that he is a billionaire software developer. You're channeling Hallmark.

When I lived in Ann Arbor, 1979, a friend told me that the Toledo Zoo had an 8 foot carp. We drove down to Toledo to see it, but the zoo was closed and I never did see it.

@axtremus said in Beijing’s Bigger Honey Trap: Sure, shutdown a few ‘cultural exchange’ programs. Then what? Are you going to shut down Disney’s distribution into China or ban Apple’s manufacturing imports from China? Even the NBA censors itself to appease China. The Transpacific Partnership Program was the one good thing that unites nations around the Pacific rim to counterbalance China. The Obama administration had the good sense to support the TPP, but stupid Trump had to blow it up, pissed off a bunch of allies, and abdicated American leaderships from strategic international institutions in his four years in office. TPP was no counterbalance to China whatsoever. All it did was send American jobs to other countries. It was described as "the final blow to manufacturing in America".

@klaus said in Trump iconography: @larry said in Trump iconography: Trump is being "hero worshipped" because he stood up for the people. It may come as a shock to you, but most instances of Trump "hero worshipping" are satirical. And it may come as a surprise to you, but the reason you thimk most of them are satirical is due to your choices of where to look.
