The graduation speaker [Verda Tetteh] excelled in high school and got into Harvard University, so no one was surprised at commencement when she was awarded a $40,000 general excellence scholarship.
But 10 minutes later, she approached the podium again, excused herself for interrupting and announced that she would prefer that a student in greater need receive the prize.
“I am so very grateful for this. But I also know that I am not the one who needs this the most,” she said. “And knowing my mom went to community college and how much that was helpful, I would be so very grateful if the administration would consider giving the general excellence scholarship to someone who is going into community college.”

Scholarships don’t work that way, young lady. You can accept the scholarship or not. If you accept, then the check is sent to the school, not for you to give away. If you turn it down, it doesn’t go to whoever you designate, it goes to the next applicant in line. Probably some wealthy white kid. Nice job.

Community college tuition is $3500. That amount is worth 10 years of community college, except…

Needy students don’t pay for community college. Their community college is often completely subsidized by Pell Grants.The typical Pell grant is $4500 per year.

I sincerely doubt that she is paying her own bill. If she isn’t, that was a kick right to the family jewels…

She has a full ride at Harvard, but yeah…I awarded 7 scholarships this year. If someone turned one down the applicant doesn’t get to just give it to someone else.
I didn’t read that far. Yale? She may be better off taking the 40K and going to a Chico State.
