Think of the days before weather forecasting. When it started raining you had no idea if it was going to blow by in an hour or destroy your home.

People were far more vulnerable in almost any way you can think of.

Man, how would you like to have to pilot one of those Kingfishers? That plane catapult does not look very long… That’s 0-60 in what? 60’? That looks rougher than taking off in a fighter on a nice long 700’ runway…

I assume they landed on the water and were hoisted back onto the catapults?

My guess was isolation, but in the thread somebody mentioned male to female ratios (men seem to commit suicide at higher rates), and somebody else brought up altitude. Apparently, there are studies supporting that theory… This is worth it’s own thread.

Altitude, fewer mental health resources and/or reluctance to use those you have, M/F ratio, % Native American, gun ownership rates.

                                All mentioned, all probably factors.

I was curious as to whether the altitude issue was overblown, maybe a result of bias without looking at other factors (altitude generally leads to higher male per female and greater isolation) so I looked up Denver. A high altitude city, but well populated, 50/50 male to female, and moderate gun ownership. Damned if it doesn’t have one of the highest suicide rates in the country…

High altitude brings fatigue and confusion, maybe more suicidal accidents.
