The NFL has a lot of guys like Josh Hill. Not drafted, but sign as a UDFA and show enough to make a roster. And then, somehow, someway, they develop a skillset that lets them have a career as long or longer, than a lot of high-profile, bally-hooed guys.
They come to work, they do their job and often the only time they get any accolades is from their teammates or their coaching staff. But those guys know how much these guys mean to a football team.
Lots of times, when Kamara has a big run or Mike Thomas gets sprung for a 20 yard+ pass, it was Josh Hill doing the dirty work. Sean Payton once said that not having Hill on the field was like losing your front door. Setting the edge block, chipping a DE to slow him down or running the clear-out on a crossing pattern...These are things that never show up on a stat sheet, but they are the things that help make an offense a Top 10, year after year.
Football in many ways is kind of a metaphor for life and
any organization. There are people who are always doing the dirty work to make the organization successful. Maybe it's the housekeeping crew in the hospital, the lunchroom worker at the school or the receptionist in a busy office, or any other mundane, lunch pail jobs that are not glamorous, flashy or maybe not even well-paid, but everybody notices when they're not there and all of the sudden, things don't run as smooth.The big wheels may make the wagon roll, but they don't work without the spokes...

. . . and, it's incredible the wisdom this man possesses. A different perspective from this person can be equally erudite and come from age or background and experience, but is equally profound. For example, another brilliant passage I would quote:
"You know, I'd say you're as dumb as a bag of hammers, but it would be an insult to a bag of hammers."
