My painting won an award!

I got into the Northwest Watercolor Society member show (70 paintings accepted out of something like 400 entries) and the awards ceremony was tonight (online) and my painting won a small award! Juror’s commendation award #2 - I think it’s like an honorable mention - there are 15 awards total (top prize is $1000!) and this prize was number 14. Honestly I was thrilled to get into this particular show (it’s very competitive) so getting an award is like icing. The juror talked about each painting, and it was recorded, I’ll try to find a link so you can hear her comments, it was pretty funny, she was most impressed with the amount of detail I managed on the woman’s face that is only about 3/4” in size.
Here’s the website - if you scroll down to the gallery, you will see my painting in the 4th row (the Nez Perce woman on the horse), and you can click on it and bring it up.

Congratulations, Jodi!
I stared at the face for a while. Yes, there is something about the expression that I like a lot. It's not a friendly smile, more of a fake smile, maybe uncomfortable circumstances or something.
Curious whether you put in a lot of thought ahead of time into what you wanted her facial expression to be?
And, I like the blues, the way they blend and are complemented by the pinkish color, is that called mauve? Probably not. Probably isn't any such color as mauve. OK, light purple, how's that.
Thanks for sharing with us! -

https://www.nwws.org/Exhibitions/Waterworks-Members-ExhibitionAm I doing something wrong? When I open the page, there are only two rows of paintings in the gallery, none of which feature a woman on a horse.

Wonderful, wonderful stuff. And, congratulations on the award it's certainly deserved. I just can't wrap my head around stuff like that and the vision that the artist has in making it.
The winning pic can be seen at Jodi's blog, by the way.

I love that painting, and it surely deserves the award. I thought it more geographically topical as well.

Looks like they’ve changed it since last night - now you have to hit the catalog bar (just a little scroll down) and it will show up - also, looks like the judges commendation gets $75! (That’s on the video, but I didn’t notice it, I was too busy listening to her talk) The video is up too, the bar right under the catalog bar - she talks about each painting in the show, she does the awards winning painting at the very end, I’m right after the 1:06 mark.

Let me guess, that $75 will go towards some new canvasses and paint?

Thanks for sharing with us!wrote on 23 Apr 2021, 13:50 last edited by@rainman - I was just happy to get an expression that looked somewhat like the photo I took of that young woman at the parade, tiny brush, and one wrong drop of color turns the smile to a scream! (Can’t tell you how many times I had to blot and start over
) The parade I shot the photo at (in the 1990’s!) is wonderful - so colorful, so much excitement, so many horses, and such incredible scenery, Joseph Oregon is in the NE corner of Oregon, at the base of the Wallowa mountains - they are spectacular. It’s a place we went in the summers when the kids were tiny - when we lived in Idaho, and then we returned to the area for a couple of years when Steve was a Dean at Eastern Oregon U.

Exactly. Or maybe a steak dinner for Steve and I.
