The Doctor's Bag
-
I was writing this morning about the doc my wife used to work for and I thought of something...doctor's bags. Even today, (he's in his 80's) he keeps his bag with him. Usually in the corner of his foyer or in the floorboard of his car, but it's always within a few dozen steps. Just a plain black leather bag, like many others.
Do doctors even have doctor's bags anymore?

I was given one upon finishing my 2nd year of medical school - that's when I left the classroom and started doing clinical work. I used it ALL the time in the next two years, but I noticed that, as I progressed, I relied less and less on the things I stored in there, and what tools I needed, I carried in the pockets of my lab coat.
Bags are a throwback to the days of house calls, when you needed to have a supply of routine meds, syringes, etc.
House calls, LOL.

This thread's starting to sound like a plot for a dirty movie.

My black bag which I schlepp everyday to work. Mostly just full of paperwork.

Another old doc I worked with thought housecalls were some of the best training he got during his residency. He said that when you could see how a patient lived and what they ate, it beat an office visit, anyday.
