Yes, he seemed like a good man to me. I think the royals were lucky to have him.

    RIP Prince Philip

Those 'gaffes' are priceless. Back before sensitivity was replaced by oversensitivity.

A man, a WWII veteran, whose life was devoted to service and duty. R.I.P.

The intensely private prince will likely be remembered for his early efforts to help modernize the royal family’s image during a time of great change for Britain and the world, especially at the outset of Elizabeth’s reign in 1952. He also developed a reputation for the occasional brusque comment and crass, if not racist jokes.

            Because, of course.

Oh, he's famous for making off-the-cuff dodgy remarks. He once said to somebody working in Asia that they'd get slitty eyes if they worked there too long.

Some real clangers in there. I recall him dropping one in Calgary back in the '60s when he was presented with a white cowboy hat. Something to the effect he was sure it would make a good flower pot or some such thing. Gave more than a few people something to harumpf about for a few days.

The queen met him when she was 13; she's 94 now. I can't image the sense of loss she must feel.

Phibes, what is the country-wide mourning protocol in England? Ie, here there is lowering the flag to half mast for a period of time. What about the queen and/or the palace?

Flags will be flown at half mast, which is much more unusual there than in the US. Black armbands for officials. Royal engagements will be cancelled. I think the one flag that isn't lowered is the one at Buckingham Palace.

It will be a pretty big deal over there, although they've asked the public not to leave flowers or gather due to Covid.

                  I was only joking

DId you know that Prince Phillip (RIP) and Queen Elizabeth II both had Queen Victoria as their great great grandmother?

                      @george-k

Philip was also the great great grandson to Tsar Nicholas I (d. 1855). It was because of that direct ancestral link to the Romanovs, that Philip provided genetic material to assist in identifying the remains of Nicholas II and his family found near Ekaterinburg back in the 1990s.

                            Meghan will not attend funeral:

"The Duke of Sussex is planning to attend. The Duchess of Sussex has been advised by her physician not to travel. So the duke will be attending," a royal spokesperson told People of the St. George's Chapel, Windsor Castle funeral service on April 17, which will be closed to the public in accordance with pandemic guidelines. Is it just me, or did people look "older" than their age back then? I see his engagement picture where he is 25(?) and he looks much older to me.

(It is not only Prince Philip, but I have seen it with others. Maybe it is just the style of dress and hair back then. 🤷 )

Oddly enough, I know of plenty of non-Covid deaths - it must be my age.

In my team of 7 engineers, 4 of us, including me, have lost a parent, none of them to Covid, in the last year.

                                      I was only joking
