I was watching the documentary Kon Tiki a couple nights ago, about an expedition from south america to the polynesian islands in 1947. Using period-appropriate equipment for the original settlement of those islands, in attempt to prove those islands were in fact settled that way. The expedition, on a balsa wood raft, did make it the 5000 miles, sailing the wind currents. But history has proven the thesis inaccurate. Ultimately it was a collection of adventurers who wanted to go on an adventure and were willing to risk their lives to do so. This is not terribly uncommon amongst humans.
Education is extremely important.

Kon Tiki
A wonderful book, as well. The author, Thor Heyerdahl, was the man who organized and said the Kon-Tiki. His nephew (I believe) is Chris Heyerdahl. Chris played "The Swede" in Hell on Wheels.
It's also a decent, but not great, movie. Gustaf Skarsgård (Floki) is in it.
