How many of the people who have been extolling the benefits of home-schooling for years are now complaining about the tyranny of not re-opening due to the pandemic?

    I was only joking

        What's the point of homeschooling?

Is it to be better at spelling and math than the average kid?

        Limit pop culture influences?

Higher education quality and lower cultural indoctrination presumably.

I would think that any parent capable of homeschooling would be capable of de-programming.

Even if there is cultural content infused in curriculum - I can't imagine it accounting for very much of the overall content.

The disadvantage feels like it would be less acclimatization to the world that you're going to eventually end up in.

Maybe I'm basing that on my own Canadian experience too much and things are different on the curriculum front these days.

There was talk of cancel culture in another thread.

Random thought for me - cancel culture and homeschooling may come from a similar place: safety from dangerous ideas.

A lot of the guys I know that did it, are going to continue.

The most successful are the guys who hired a retired teacher. The teacher does about 4-5 hours/day, with usually around three kids. Usual pay = $30/hour, split between parents.

                          It is not just programming

                          In Boston, it is crime

It was a lot worse 50 years ago, but it is still the case

In many public schools education is next to impossible

So you pay $15K-$30K for private or move to the suburbs or homeschool, or join a strong gang and hope for your share of the drug profits

Here is a story from a couple years ago

I attended the school that has now the #3 most crime-ridden school zones in Boston, it was nice in 1960

I'd always kind of assumed that the archetypal home-schooler isn't living in inner-city Boston.
