National Review has lost its way...

I don’t get the stance. The author starts out by extolling the old guard - but those exact people are the foundation of the conservative establishment.

I think the population of old school ideological conservatives overlaps heavily with never-Trumpers.

Basically, he's a Trump supporter, and NR don't like Trump, so he doesn't read NR any more.

And he likes that scumbag Conrad Black.

        Ah, well.....

The stance is simple: National Review historically has supported the more right-leaning or conservative candidate in a Presidential election (or most any other election) and personality was not a factor. Because of TDS, they abandoned their core principles.

So when historically seasoned Democrats move over to Trump, it's because they're smart, informed voters who see the errors of their ways. When historically seasoned Republicans move over to vote Biden, it's because of TDS?

Yes. Stability and time tested principle is core for the right, while change is core for the left.

I'm sure that NR would say that they feel that Trump has hijacked American conservatism for his own selfish ends, and is beneath contempt for doing so, and that for this reason they cannot bring themselves to support him.

They're certainly not alone in this opinion.

I don't care for whose purposes conservatism has been hijacked. I care about whether conservative policies and programs are being pushed or enacted.

For the most part, Trump governed as a conservative. Moreso than Bush II.

I guess I am interested in what are "core" conservative principles and how presidents differ:

                          trade
                          immigration
                          national debt

                          etc

I think Trump's America First position on trade is a more conservative position than the Free Trade position of Bush. Trump was for global trade, but not on terms that put Anerica at a competitive advantage.

Trump was more conservative than Bush on border integrity, although Bush was much better than the bext guy up.

As for state's rights, I think there is no better example than Trump's response to COVID. He could cajole, convince or criticize, but he didn't try to usurp authority from the states.
