We are going to increasingly be living in algorithm hell for the next several years.

This week Siri started sending me a “suggestion” to check on a certain stock. This I’m sure is just the beginning.

Auto alerts are going to be more common than robo calls.

Nah. There's always going to be a demand for devices that block this kind of messaging. On my phone, I don't have notifications, and Siri isn't activated.

    Please love yourself.

iOS 14 has a feature that blocks any call from someone not in your contact list. If it's a legit call, they'll leave a voicemail. If they don't leave a message, screw-em and they end up in the "blocked caller" file.

        👍

Deactivating, Siri, Cortana, Google Assistant, or whatever its name is is the first thing I do on any electronic device.

Then I usually try to find scripts or the like to de-bloat and de-crapify the device. For Windows, for instance, there's a good script. I also opt out of any tracking, personalized ads, ... . I disable all notifications except the ones I really want. Then add a good ad blocker for the browser and slowly the device approaches usability.

This is good but you kind of want to see what’s going on because every company is trying to take people out of the equation and using algorithms to drive not only click bait but now business.

The paper world is going bye bye real fast.

Not here. In Germany, it's considered "high tech" if we send each other fax instead of physical letters.

Not that I'm in the market, and the last time I bought a car, 2 ½ years ago, it was from a "no-haggle" dealer who had exactly what I was looking for....

But how does it work with dealers? Presumably that's what Jon was talking about.

I've bought 2 cars in the last 5 years.

Both times I had already negotiated before walking into the showroom (over the internet and email)

You can use tools like "TrueCar" to start getting quotes from various dealers - then you get a sense for what's fair and send best/final offers to dealers. Plus there are forums online where people post what they paid for specific models.

For the van I bought, I told the dealer "I'll pay you $X for the car if I like it (with X down, etc.), I won't waste your time. I just want to come in and test drive it, if I like it, I'll buy it on the spot"

I walked out with the number we had discussed (the financing department still tried to sell me all the add-ons and warranties).

Yep. That's what I do, but usually in person. I do my research, decide what I want and then decide what I am willing to pay for it, tax, title, everything. i drive it and if I like it my offer is I will write you a check for this vehicle for this amount, all in. All I want to hear in response is a yes or a no. Anything else and I walk.

Person on the phone: "Can you fax that over to me please?"

                                      Jon: "I'm sorry, I can't. I don't have fax where I am."

Person on the phone: "I see, where is that?"

                                      Jon: "The twenty-first century."
