I remember reading this book when I was a kid. It was so long ago, that I hardly remembered anything about the story other than it was about some guy imprisoned on Devil's Island.
I also never saw the movie with Steve McQueen and Dustin Hoffman.
This afternoon, I
wastedspent 2 hours watching the 2017 remake with Charlie Humnan and Rami Malek.Don't waste your time. It's a disjointed mess. It got mediocre reviews, but, to my surprise, it's 7.1 on IMDB.
I should seek out the Steve McQueen version.
Also, reading up on it, there are serious questions about the accuracy of the protagonist's "memoirs." Lots of stuff just doesn't fit.

I saw the Steve McQueen version many years ago and liked it.

Like you, I read the book when quite young and thought the McQueen version of the movie was a decent representation of it.
Found and watched it.
Much better than the 2017 version, even allowing for the 1970s "vibe" of the movie. Though longer by 30 minutes, it seemed to be paced better.
