I admitted to thinking twice and thrice when someone historical name drops as if they have some deep knowledge of some deep concept that applies directly to our current lives. Actually they do not want it to mean anything more than what it is, an event or series of past events. Like literature, history describes the world as it has been created by the human condition. It is not about anything else.
You are correct though people are learners. They learn from experience.
