Facebook Australia: Tech giant faces growing criticism over news ban
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-australia-56116738The Australian government passed a law that says Facebook and other Internet social media platforms will have to pay a share of their advertising revenue to Australian news publishers. Facebook says they don’t want to pay for content that they do not create and do not ask for. So Facebook just stopped allowing Australian news sites to be linked on Facebook and disallow Australian news content to be posted on Facebook. So now Facebook is taking flak for “banning news”.
People do share news stories on Facebook. But I don’t think people should depend on Facebook to get their news.
I don’t even like Facebook, but as a matter of public policy, I am with Facebook on this one. Of Facebook does not want to carry Australian news on its site, that should be fine.
