I had a similar experience with Fedex where something going 30 miles ended up in Kentucky before wending its way back to me.

It probably makes a certain sense in the grand scheme of things.

A friend of mine was CEO of a grocery delivery company. He said they had three different ‘pick lines’ where a box would go down a path and people would put things in them as they went by, based on the order.

He said ‘if you ordered a battery, an orange, and can of tomato sauce it would show up at your house in three boxes and we’d look really really stupid’

Indeed it does. See the Spoke–hub distribution paradigm.

Couple of weeks ago, I mailed a package to my daughter who lives one county over from Richmond, Virginia.

The package got to the Richmond distribution center the next day. Then it went to San Bernadino, California and back to the Richmond distribution center over the course of 4 days.

She finally received it 7 days after I mailed it. And this was 2 day priority mail.

          Idiots.

Yes, there are two paths you can go by, but in the long run, there's still time to change the road you're on.

Everything in logistics is a mess right now. I doubt your situation is unique.

I have an order scheduled to come in from China via Hong Kong.
Received an email yesterday, that DHL raised their rates for air delivery 80%, they wanted to know if I wanted to switch to cargo ship.

I'd like some explanation from DHL. We're now looking at an $1800 shipping charge, which will of course be passed on to customers.

Probably. But it doesn't change what I said at all.

The USPS has changed how it routes things, to a hub concept. For example, if I mail something in the center of Louisiana up to the northern border of the state, it must go through Shreveport and then it goes to the nearest post office...Something mailed from my house to the nearest town about 20 miles away, must travel a few hundred miles before arriving at its destination.

I mailed a package to my granddaughter on the 21st (2 days ago), priority mail. It got to the Richmond Distribution Center at 11 p.m. that night.

I checked this morning, and it's in the Queens, NY Distribution Center. WTF!?!?!? on it's way back to the Richmond Distribution Center.

It's the last time I mail any package with USPS. Fuck 'em.

                          1. Have you compared prices with other services? You may have to pay UPS or FedEx a lot more to ship the same package to the same destination.
                          2. (Put your tinfoil hat on for this) Have you considered the possibility that the USPS route all packages and mail pieces through a few specific "big distribution hubs" because the Trump administration government has installed super secret scanning technologies at those "big hubs" to scan all the mail and packages to detect speech that is insufficiently flattering of Trump spy on the Democrats' communications screen out potentially harmful material for your protection? You might be happy to know that the day they stop routing everything to a few big hubs is the day they have that super secret scanning tech installed in all their facilities. 😎

Called my daughter this morning to tell her the package we sent was currently in Queens, NY.

She said, "Great! In the F'in epicenter of the coronavirus!" She'll be leaving it to quarantine on her porch for a week.

apart from the rates, dhl also has many other restrictions. Some time the shipment becomes on hold by DHL and somrtimes this may creat a great trubble.
