The heart-lung machine had a car stereo head unit mounted in it. It was then hard-wired to speakers that were mounted on the walls.

When our place opened a new building, with new ORs, the heart surgeons were insistent on having a good sound system installed.
Being insistent ≠ being smart.
The speakers were positioned on the walls, toward the foot of the OR table. So, anyone standing at the table would hear everything from one ear, depending on whether they were standing to the right or left of the patient.
However, the gas-passer would face the foot of the table, so he would be facing both speakers.
A much more satisfactory audio experience as far as heart surgery goes.
Just sayin'.
