Death Toll Comparison Breakdown
-
Humans know surprisingly little about the actual numbers of people that died in key moments throughout history. Most of us know that 3,000 people died on 9/11, but how many Americans know how many Katrina victims there were, or how many people died in the American Revolution. Did the Christian Crusades kill 100 times as many people as the Vietnam War? Or were they identical in their death tolls? Given how much we talk about historical human tragedies, it seems like something we should have a better handle on. So let’s take a look.

Very cool article. Thanks for sharing.
Interesting to also think about the numbers being "normalized" so that they fit into the concept of the time that they occurred.
As I mentioned in the "Reading" thread, I am looking at a couple of books about the Black Death. Huge numbers even when it occurred, but when it is thought of as a % of the population of the time, it is even more tremendous.

I'd be more interested in deaths per capita. Based on the world wide population during the Black Death years the totality of that must have been mind boggling.
It was between 30% and 60% in Europe. I read somewhere that a half of all Londoners died.
