Is this like "A bit of pregnancy?"

My former colleague's wife is a pharmacist who specializes in diabetic pharmacology. One common expression that always gets her is when she is hears someone say, be it an aquaintance, patient or even the odd GP, "borderline diabetic". She always points out that as a woman is either pregnant or she is not. So too a person is either diabetic or not.
