Was it known that Tom Selleck was originally cast for Indy?
It's the entertainment industry. I'm sure they knew.
That didn't factor into the decision-making, though. They wanted to borrow from (what was then) pop culture to modernize the characters. Indy fit Chip's personality, while Magnum fit Dale's and the two provided a good balance.
