I just finished Scalzi's last book.
The protagonist is talking to a bunch of...difficult dolphins who want to forma union.
(I know, talking dolphins)
"Seventy-three" is one of the dolphins.
"“I don’t care,” I said. “These dolphins and cats are intelligent. They have rights, or should, anyway. Just as many as you or me, as far as I’m concerned.”
“I…” Livgren paused and looked over to Morrison.
“Why are you looking at me?” Morrison said. “You’re talking to Charlie now.”
“It’s just a big change,” Livgren said, and then exhaled. “I’m sorry. Yes, fine. Yes. You’re right, I see that. Some part of my brain thinks of them just as dolphins, and not as, you know, thinking individuals.”
“If you’re going that far you could see all animals as having rights,” Seventy-three said. “Whether you think they’re smart or not.”
“You eat fish,” I said to him.
“True,” Seventy-three said. “Fuck fish.”
