I remember in the 90s my very distributed firm used voice mail the way people use emails today - it’s basically how we communicated. Navigating it required touch tone phones.
I went to Latin America and touch tone was rare. I used to carry around a little battery operated DTMF generator so I could “check my Octel”

That was not an advancement. When they were dial phones you could tap out the number and call for free on pay phones.
