Do you guys use 'em? I know the transfer rate is low but I don't care about that, it can take as long as it wants.
Any recommendations?

Wouldn’t that be the same thing as a NAS?

Nope, never have used one, never had the need.
Now, if you have an external hard drive and want to stream media to your laptop, phone, or tablet, that's another thing, of course. That's easily accomplished. There are tons of solutions out there - I use Stream/ServeToMe.

Why wireless? You want the family to share?

As Klaus said, I think you’re looking for a NAS.

Not sure what you want it for, but take the unit like the one above - it has two drive slots and you can put the HDDs in mirror mode. (so if one fails all your stuff is still on the other)
You access them through a wired or wireless connection on your home network /WiFi.
A lot of these new ones will even allow you to log in remotely and get your files through the internet. (Interface usually isn’t great, but it works)

Yeah, basically to back stuff up easily, no matter where you are and what device you're on. We have, oh, about 3 power outlets in our home, so "just plug it in to your computer" is actually a pain in the ass.
Thanks for the reccos all; looking into them how.

Easier to get everyone to do scheduled backups if you don't have to be hard wired.

Sorry, no advice except to say that, I would never use one.

Check whether your Wi-Fi router let you connect and “share” an external disk. If so, you can buy any external drive (as long as it can connect to your Wi-Fi router, most likely via USB) and share that drive in the house. Good luck.
