Seasonality could certainly be factor, but that does not take into account the rural nature of the Dakotas nor the behavior of the citizens. Did that change when it started going up? I think Matt draws conclusions that are better seen as questions to be examined.

Now, look at SoCal. The lockdowns, etc., have been harsh to say the least (at least for the plebs) and they're drowning.
I don't pretend to being even close to an answer, but the questions are jarring.

Don't get me wrong, I fervently hope it is seasonality.

I would be a lot happier with the idea that it's seasonality if it was May, but it's December.

Maybe it's going home to China for Christmas.

Does he have data on mask usage to make such a claim?

I don't think so. I think he's talking about "mandates" in a more general sense.
I'd love to see something like that on how effective just masks are. I doubt that's available, however.

I think masks are fine and effective within their limitations. Your behavior in distancing is just as important.

To be honest, I wouldn't have thought that mandates would affect the date of the peak so much as the size of the peak. There's also the question of whether anybody's taking any notice any more, and whether the virus realises where the State line is.
The implication that there's nothing we can do isn't particularly helpful, or cheering for that matter.

Rand Paul has described them as "theater."
That may, or may not, be the case. However, if they are not theater, I'm willing to do even the smallest thing to help. It's really not a big deal.

No, it really isn't a big deal, other than not going to indoor restaurants and having larger gatherings. But it will be temporary. I worry that we consider this such a hardship.

A cynic would say if anybody knows theatre, it's Rand Paul....

I'm a belt and suspenders kind of person. Entering stores, I typically have on 2 masks - a surgical mask under a N95 mask. I do re-use them and keep a new box of surgical masks in the car.
If I'm outside running in the street, I use cloth masks - which are largely cosmetic - but I figure with a 30 mph wind and being 50 feet away from most people, there's minimal risk.
If we saw this coming, I think we might have had better masks for people to utilize - and made use of them earlier - perhaps with more impact than has been experienced. Japan and China have cultural norms that encourage one to wear a mask. If you get ill, it's "your fault." Japan avoided the lockdowns.

Might want to reverse that. An N95 has to fit right to work right. It can't fit right if it's riding on a surgical mask.
