    A manager at one of the places I worked finished his last day before retirement, after about 20 years, by saying 'I'm just popping out for lunch', and then never coming back. He didn't tell anybody he was retiring, he just left at lunchtime.

    A certain Russian colleague of repute has a photograph of the guy's gravestone in his drawer. He says it's to remind himself that the guy is really dead. It's fair to say he wasn't overly popular.

    I was only joking

      An orthopedic surgeon with whom I used to work did pretty much the same thing. He showed up for his scheduled cases and said, "You won't be seeing me any more. I'm closing up shop." And never crossed the threshold to the OR again.

        This guy didn't tell anybody other than his immediate manager he was leaving - and he ran one of the groups. Old school management style. That's Old School with a capital Asshole.

          I knew you were a sissy, but I didn't know until this moment that you are retarded too.

          I see you're making progress with your education, you've obviously taken the advice given elsewhere and got your thesaurus out to learn a few new and more colourful words.
          Well done Larry. Keep it up. Every little helps.

            Jolly, you appear to know what Larry was saying, and I'd be grateful for your explanation

              @andyd Two things:

              1. If a horse or mule founders, the very first course of action is not to shoot them, although shooting may or may not have to be done.

              2. I don't even think Larry owns a gun. Which is unusual in the American South. I'd worry a lot more about me. I think I have one or two around the house.😄

                I did that.

                After 29 years with EDS/Perot.

                I cleaned out my desk one afternoon. The next day I told the boss I was done, and I went home.

                I only planned it a few hours ahead, really. It was no big deal. I was just done. I was on good terms with everyone, a good way to leave it.

                A few days later I wandered over to the airport to find out how to become a pilot.

                  Mine was similar. I was a contractor so I did not want lunch or presents or attention. I just didn't take any more contracts. Had I known what this year would be like I probably would have kept working, but I had had enough. I was tired of having to drag clients kicking and screaming onto the path of righteousness.

                    I was on the Closing Crew. The hospital closed at 2359, June 30th. I was supposed to retire, but was asked to stay on until lab equipment and histology slides, etc, were all taken care of.

                    When I finally walked out the door, there were only 10 people left out of 556. I didn't even have to say good-bye, except to the walls. Locked the lab up, threw the keys in the holder in the ED and walked out the ED ambulance door...
