Sweden ends its experiment

It’s not. But I suspect Swedish citizens compare themselves to the more similar countries in Scandinavia rather than US, France, or Belgium.

Presumably lower population density tends to be a good thing for avoiding Covid, and Scandinavia is lower than Western Europe/USA?

Good point. John Burns-Murdoch has been preaching for almost a year that (whatever) case/population is not an accurate representation of the pandemic.

It would be interesting to see a graph of population density vs. cases/deaths.
Obviously, there would be some extremes. Singapore has one of the highest population density, but low case/death. Taiwan is the same - high population density and low cases/deaths.
There are so many other factors that are tough to include and graph.
