A Japanese town has deployed robot wolves in an effort to scare away bears that have become an increasingly dangerous nuisance in the countryside.

The town of Takikawa on the northern island of Hokkaido purchased and installed a pair of the robots after bears were found roaming neighbourhoods in September. City officials said there have been no bear encounters since.

What a good solution, a modern scarecrow! I guess most animals have the sense not to fight whenever possible, in case of debilitating injury.

Canada Geese (also known as flying rats) are a major nuisance here. They flock in the hundreds, leaving poop all over park spaces, being aggressive, and just plain loud.

At my hospital's parking lot, they positioned silhouettes of dogs to deter the geese from "grazing" there.

As you can see, the geese were terrified of them.

@George-K said in Monster Wolves vs. Wild Bears:

Animals are pretty smart. The decoy may work for a short time, but after a while they learn that it’s not going to react, so they learn to live with it.

Maybe robots that will actually move will have a better chance

Yeah, our HOA members were screaming to buy those goose lights to drive them away. I said no, another group across the lake had put them in. Let's see how they do. It scared them off for a couple weeks then the geese realized the lights were no threat and it was back to business as usual.

Everyone wants to live in natural surroundings until they see what is entailed.

The best thing I've seen to keep them off a golf course is a dog trained to chase them.

Ok so I was curious and looked up wolves in Japan and found out there were two species but both were driven extinct by people once they modernized.

                But then I saw this...

Probably all wishful thinking, but it would be cool if they found a live wolf after a century.

                You were warned.

@jon-nyc very neat story. The pictures looked like a dog to me, it would be neat if they found out it was a wolf.

After all, they recently found a deer mammal In Vietnam that had not been seen for many Years, so it is possible.

Do an image search of ‘wolves in Japan’. You’ll see their old wolves were far more dog-like than the American or European varieties.

                    You were warned.
