I actually went to school with a load of farmers. Still kind of friends with a few of them. Also car mechanics, doctors, financial advisors and what have you. You seem to be making a few assumptions about me, too.
It's just the nature of things now. The K street lobbyist has nothing in common with the Wyoming farmer. Both think they know everything about the other based on their mental caricatures.

I think their assumption is that Americans don’t think of them much at all, with the possible exception of that guy John they always ask after
