Google makes almost all their products available for free. So investment will be commensurate to how much they can monetize the user.

Google is indeed not free, it is paid for by advertisers and they are selling us. Everyone who thought the internet was near free had a massive joke played on them. We are now seeing the real cost to us... basically technology has gone from a tool to help us to one that increasingly directs our behavior.
