I for one always cringe when somebody claims to know for sure how the election will turn out.
Even after they're repeatedly wrong. It's sometimes hard to tell the difference between prediction and pom-pom waving.
I learned my lesson after staying up late to watch the glorious Labour victories of the 1980's as a student. There's nothing quite like been sat up at 2am watching bloody Margaret Thatcher giving her acceptance speech and realising you've run out of alcohol and cigarettes.

I was pretty sure Trump would win in 16 based on what I saw. This year? Not a clue. Or, more accurately, I see a lot of clues going both ways. Difficult to separate the wheat from the chaff.
I did watch the debates last night for the two congressional districts around us. They had all four candidates and it was well run. If there is a God in heaven the GOP will retain both seats.Both Democratic challengers were not ready for prime time, and the one young thing appeared for all the world like she was running for high school class president, She showed her ignorance of the issues and government at every opportunity.

And if anyone is curious, I will tell you how I voted and why.
I honestly did not know how I would vote, finding both candidates repugnant in their own way. It came down to three things for me.
The first was the behavior of the Democrats and their insane efforts over the past four years to overturn the election, and the press's complicity in that. This includes cancel culture, press bias, dishonesty and putting politics so far above the good of the nation that it didn't really factor in. I find these things a far greater danger to the republic than Trump's antics.
The second was foreign policy. Trump has made a lot of progress in this area. He is not well liked for it, but he did a lot of the things that needed to be done and the nation will be stronger for it, and I think the world more peaceful. The Iran nuclear deal was a disastrous piece of window dressing that financed our primary adversary in the region and gave them carte blanche to develop nuclear weapons just so long as it didn't happen on Obama's watch. He has broken the logjam in the Middle East with new players recognizing Israel that further isolates the Palestinian leaders who continue to sacrifice the lives and wellbeing of their people for a fantasy of destroying Israel.
The third, of course, is the federal courts. I am in great favor of judges and justices who will interpret the laws and constitution as written, not as malleable documents to promote social fads. If it were up to me they'd all be Scalia. The Supreme Court is a check and balance, not a policy making arm of government.

I completely agree with point 1.
Point 2, eh, I dunno. (Part of that's my own ignorance, though.)
As for point 3, I'd be okay seeing judges with more malleable interpretations--the world of today is after all very different from the world in which many of these laws originate--but not in the current political climate. Your concerns about social fads is obviously legitimate for anyone who watches the news. Using the courts as another forum for social change is becoming a more popular idea and that's dangerous.

I can't predict who will win, either. One thing I do know, or can be sort of reasonably sure of: both parties are FUBAR right now. Neither can be said to be effective leaders.
I'm off and on reading a book whose thesis is that both parties are completely gonzo, partisanship-wise. He claims that some polls even show a belief in the people that Capitol Hill is more irrationally split and more partisan in virtually all issues than the people themselves. (And arguably Trump has little to do with beyond pouring gasoline on the flames of his choice.) He shows also that this is not the first time this has happened in our history -- so there's hope. But we're gonna need people with brains and integrity and courage and love of country over party to fix it. Unless and until that time arrives, slinging shit at the oppo is an even greater waste of time than usual.
Until then, who wins in November is a crapshoot, IMO.

Honestly, you listen to some of these people talk, and they're so out of touch.
(No offence to the senior members here, most of whom don't sound nearly so out of touch)
